Dust, grime, and bacteria accumulate on your devices faster than you think. Regular cleaning not only keeps things hygienic but extends the lifespan of your tech. Here's how to do it safely.
What You'll Need
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% or 90%)
- Microfibre cloths
- Compressed air canister
- Soft-bristle brush
- Cotton swabs
Cleaning Your Laptop
Power off and unplug first. Use compressed air to blast dust from the keyboard and vents. Wipe the screen with a dry microfibre cloth — never use paper towels as they scratch. For the body and keyboard, lightly dampen a cloth with isopropyl alcohol.
Cleaning Your Smartphone
Phones carry more bacteria than a toilet seat. Use a slightly damp microfibre cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Avoid getting moisture in the charging port. Clean the case separately with warm soapy water.
Cleaning Your Monitor
Never spray liquid directly onto the screen. Spray onto a microfibre cloth first, then wipe in circular motions. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners — they strip anti-glare coatings.
Keyboard Deep Clean
Remove keycaps if possible and wash them in warm soapy water. Use compressed air under the keys, then a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean between switches.
How Often Should You Clean?
- Smartphone: Weekly wipe-down, monthly deep clean
- Keyboard: Monthly compressed air blast, quarterly deep clean
- Monitor: Bi-weekly dust, monthly full clean
- Laptop vents: Every 3–6 months
A clean device runs cooler, lasts longer, and frankly just feels better to use.
